Sean Fights Back To Win Lancs Champs

Our own Sean Towndrow produced a fine comeback in the final round to win the recent Lancashire County Championship – finishing with a round of four under par to end up on a two under par total of 282 for the four rounds.

Sean, who last won the event at Hesketh seven years ago, played some outstanding golf and came from seven shots back to win by three at Lancaster Golf Club.

Following his victory, Sean spoke to David Birtill of and praised family, friends and the golfing community for their support through his battle against illness.

“There have been some dark days, obviously, but I just cannot believe the support I have had through messages, cards, emails, on social media. There was always a new message or encouragement when things were tough and I cannot thank everyone enough for helping me deal with it all as positively as possible.

“That includes the officers of the Lancashire Union of Golf Clubs, and England Golf and team manager Kevin Tucker, but I would like to make special mention of my coach and mentor at S&A, Jim Payne. He became someone I spoke to about more than golf and he was always there for me.

“Coming into the final day seven back, I just wanted to play well enough to give myself a chance of catching up. I had to dig deep in the morning, but got it round, and when I saw the other scores I thought I might have a bit of a chance.

“In the final round I holed one big putt, of 50 feet for a birdie on the eighth, but I played pretty solidly and took my chances to score where I could. Then it was just a case of waiting to see what happened.

“I think my experience may have helped in putting together a round to put pressure on other people, but I have been striking the ball pretty well.”

The Lancashire Championship win continued a superb run of form for Sean, who recently won the Formby Hare and the Lancashire Links Trophy.
